The Cow Says Moo!

(From my journal to Jacob)

Trees are "eee." You have to point them out. Every single one that you notice. Your dad says there are a lot of them on the way to Nana's.

You've been sick with something you got from Brianna. You have a really phlegmy (spelling?) cough. Today you had some food in your mouth and started coughing, then choking, and then threw up. It really scared me!

You make a really cute tiny sound when we say "cat." You say, "Moo" when we say cow.

You sprouted at least 3 teeth this week. You are super drooly and snotty. You blow when we give you a kleenex and then you throw it away.

Wally Steps Up

(From my journal to Jacob)

Yesterday your dad spent all day making you a crawl-in house out of a cardboard box. It is so cool! He glued on each shingle (approx 620 of them). You go in it and just laugh and laugh. It's hilarious. We started watching Babe with you, and it makes you laugh. You got roseola a couple of weeks ago and ran a fever of about 104. It scared me. The doctor said everyone gets it, though. You LOVE your blankie and Wally. You have to pull the plastic guard rails off of your crib before you go to sleep, but they have to go back on when you're awake. You love to blow kisses. Your mouth stays open the whole time and you say, "Ahhm-whah" really loudly. You do it sometimes before you go to sleep. You love to laugh. You love cats and dogs. You love to play chase around teh house. You say "cracker" sometimes (cah-cah).

Bah-woo!

(From my journal to Jacob)

Last Friday I got you a balloon at Babies R Us. You loved it! You started saying, "Bah-woo" last Friday. It's so cute. We had to get rid of the balloon yesterday, though. You've started to not take your morning nap. You still go to your crib, and you just talk for a while before you fuss. You're not taking a longer nap in the afternoon, so you're tired in the evening. You love books and want us to read them over and over again. You love your blankie.

Bedtime, Fun Times, Worries, and Food Preferences

(From my journal to Jacob)

You applaud yourself whenever you think you've done something good -- bringing a diaper to the Genie, stacking blocks, being nice to the cat, dumping all of the water bottles all over the kitchen. :) Last night I gave you your blankie and said it was time for bed. You walked straight to your crib and put your arms up. I put you in and you went right to sleep. Your dad and I were laughing hard because it amazed us and it was so cute!

You kick your soccer ball around, but have to throw it at the cats if they are close. You think that's hilarious. You help put toys away at bed time. You dance to "Old MacDonald" and say, "Ee-ohh." You love being outside and you want to run in the street. You do not want to hold hands. You freak out when your dad or I cough a lot or sneeze. You sort of cry out and then you're almost crying until you get to use and get as close as possible. Then you look really worried and keep watching and patting us. It's so sweet that you're worried, but your dad and I can't figure out how you'd even know there could be something to worry about.

You love to give hugs. You love to chase us and have us chase you. You love meat sticks and canned carrots. You do not like macaroni and cheese or Cheerios. You love Goldfish crackers. You don't like soda or juice (good!) but you love sweet tea. You don't get much of that, though. Just water and milk. You LOVE ice cream. You look for Daddy sometimes in the afternoon. It's sweet. I wish you understood that he's at work or class. We love you! You are so fun and so loving.

Jacob's First Football Game

(From my journal to Jacob)

Saturday was your first football game. We went to the Butler Homecoming game. You liked the marching band and danced. You wanted to walk around, but we were sitting on a steep hill, and it was crowded. We left after half time and walked around Butler for a little. You enjoyed the crunchy leaves. On Sunday we went to IU with your Aunt Jeanne, Uncle Steve, and Brianna. You were both good, but you didn't want to pose for photos.

The One Year Report

(From my journal to Jacob)

Time really flies. Today we went to Target and you were doing your laughing and smiling at everyone. You are so charming. You bring your dirty diapers to the Diaper Genie. You turn off the bathroom light (when I hold you up). You like to take your shoes and socks off and try to put them back on. You understand things like, "Go get your bottle." You like your bear blanket and reach for it when you go to sleep. You're having fun working on "Daddy." You say the "d" sound really hard. You take our socks off. You brought wipes to us for a while whenever you had a poopy diaper. We went to a Chinese buffet and you flirted so much with a waitress that she kissed you goodbye. You carry the heaviest stuff you can find. At your birthday party, Theo and Rosie gave you a push popper toy, and you just carried it around everywhere. In the morning, you like to go find Daddy and wake him up. You like to give hugs and cuddle. Your dad likes when he picks you up and you put your arm around him and pat his shoulder. You love to laugh. You are almost running. You are so wonderful.

Jacob Turns One

(From my journal to Jacob)

I can't believe you're one year old! You're so big! On Tuesday, I had to work, but everyone on your dad's side came over to celebrate. You had a cupcake. :) Saturday's the big party.

You're walking everywhere and you barely ever crawl anymore. You're so busy and so happy. You're so excited.

Your upper left side tooth (not the middle, but next to it) just came in.

A Trip to Minnesota

(From my journal to Jacob)

Yesterday you whistled twice! You don't know how you do it, but you're aware of it.

You're taking lots of steps, but you're still cautious.

You're drinking milk except for one breast feeding in the morning. You're talking like crazy. You're so sweet!

We went to MN on the 31st to your Great Aunt Karen's lake house. With the travel and people wanting to spend time with you, your schedule was really thrown off. You stopped napping well, you barely ate, and you became really clingy with me. You're just starting to get back on track. We're not there yet, though.

Tonight you get your third haircut. Woo hoo! I love you.

Sheets and Fun Stuff

(From my journal to Jacob)

You're getting braver with your steps. You've actually taken a couple of steps and looked like you knew you were doing it. You're cruising everywhere. You'll walk just holding my hand with one hand.

Today I was folding sheets and I had one spread out on the floor and was getting ready to start folding. You got really excited and crawled onto it. You just kept crawling back and forth on it. I put the top sheet beside it and you played with it. I folded up the bottom sheet while you were playing with the top sheet, and you got really upset. It was funny.

You love the animals on Baby MacDonald. You like to clap with Wheel of Fortune and you really like the Final Jeopardy music.

You give big open-mouthed kisses sometimes. I'm not sure if they're kisses, actually, because a lot of times you say, "Ahhhh" as you do it.

If your dad or I lie on the floor on our backs and a little tummy shows, you push the shirt up farther and rest your head on it. It's sweet, but I wonder where you got that.

Cheerios are still a staple of every meal. You like to feed them to us. They apparently go with everything.

We went to see the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants yesterday (just the two of us). We made it through an hour and a half before you got bored and wanted to crawl around. Not bad! (It's two hours long.)

Jacob's 11 Months Old!

(From my journal to Jacob)

Happy 11 month birthday! One more month and you're a year old! Wow. Lately you've been shutting doors and then immediately crying. You don't like being shut in rooms. You cry even if I'm in there with you. It's pretty funny. Last night you went from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. without eating. I'm so proud of you! You only woke up twice. Not bad at all. I love you!

Jacob Can Walk!

(From my journal to Jacob)

Oh my goodness! I think you just took your first step!!! I was sitting at the computer and I saw you standing out of the corner of my eye. Then you took a step (maybe 2) and touched my leg! Yay! I'm so proud of you!

Naps Feel Good

(From my journal to Jacob)

You are so cute. We bought you a little papasan-type chair and you just lounge in it and water Baby Einstein. You squeal and wave your arms and legs when it comes on. You're holding your feet right now. You can stand long enough to clap and say, "Yay." We think you're steady enough to walk, but you're still afraid. You've been going from midnight until 8 in the morning without eating. It's very exciting! I'm trying to give you bottles as often possible with breast milk and whole milk to get you used to it. You still prefer nursing and won't take all milk bottles. You're pretty routine about sleep now. First nap - 10:15, second nap 2:30 or 3, and bedtime at 8. You nap for 45-75 minutes.

Daddy Takes Over

(From my journal to Jacob)

You hold the remote control to your ear like it's a telephone. I say, "Hello? Hello? Jacob!" and you smile. It's so cute! Your dad and I tried something new last night. I fed you at 11:30 when you woke up, but after that, your dad took over. At 2, you woke up. He went in and held you, and then put you down. You cried for 4 minutes and then slept until 6:15. He went in again. You cried for 10 minutes and slept until 7, which was our goal. We're trying to get you to sleep through the night without a feeding. Last night was very promising. I thought I'd have to feed you or that you'd at least cry more. Not bad at all!

The Judges Were Paid Off

(From my journal to Jacob)

You can stack 4 small blocks on top of a bigger one. You're cruising a lot. Lately you go down for naps and bedtime with little to no fussing. You didn't win the baby contest (the older babies did), but we did run into Bennett S., and the two of you shared Cheerios and cereal puffs. You love playing with Brianna. The two of you get along really well. You love to play the piano and recorder. You want to climb everything.

You don't like wet diapers. You used to not care. Now you pull on it. You still scream during diaper changes.

We love you! We're starting to think about a baby brother or sister for you. Oh yeah, you wear a 4.5 to 5 size shoe!!!

Jacob is SO Big!

(From my journal to Jacob)

You're 10 months old! That's crazy! You climbed stairs on June 13th. You could match colors about then. On your Playschool Ride/Push toy, there's a green triangle opening, a purple square opening, and a blue circle opening. A lot of times you can't get the shape in, but you do put it on the correct color. I thought I saw your lower right incisor on June 28th, but I might have been wrong. You're drinking out of a straw. You love to say "yay" and clap your hands. It's more like, "Aaaay." We do, "How big is Jacob?" and "So big!" with your arms up now. It's so fun. You squish your head kind of onto your shoulders so you have a double chin when you do "So big." You play peek-a-boo by ducking under furniture. It's so cute! We can always still see your fingers. You tried to play with the cats a couple of days ago. Oh, about a week ago, I said, "Can you say 'Momma'?" You smiled, and said, "Dad." You did it again later that day. I know it was coincidence, but it was pretty funny. You climbed up onto the couch a week ago and again today.

You LOVE Cheerios, and that's about it. You're still not a big eater. We're happy to get one size 2 jar down per meal. Saturday you're going to be in a baby contest at the Marion County Fair. We thought it might be fun.

Lately you like to do a little laugh out of nowhere just to make us laugh. When you're thinking about doing something bad, you slap your hands on top of each other.

Jacob's First Haircut

(From my journal to Jacob)

Yesterday you got your first haircut. We went to Cookie Cutters in Greenwood. You were very wary, but didn't actually ever fuss.

The First Father's Day

(From my journal to Jacob)

It's your first Father's Day. You're giving your dad a poker table top and chips. Last night you crawled up 3 stairs at your Grandpa's house. A couple of weeks ago (maybe 3?) you got up a few at Nana's house. You are trying to figure out how to climb out of your crib. You love it when I shake my head with you and whip my ponytail around. We are going out shopping since your dad is at a race.

Random Photo: Jacob Stands

Random Photo: Jacob & Brianna Outside

Grass is Scary!

(From my journal to Jacob)

We saw your top left tooth on Saturday and a little of the right one is showing. Today you climbed up onto your play table and stood on it and held onto an end table. You are afraid of grass. Brianna kept pulling it up, so you tentatively touched it, but you don't like it.

Water Bottles Are Awesome

(From my journal to Jacob)

You turn your head/upper body back and forth over and over again. It's a kind of game. We take turns doing it and laughing. You love water bottles. If we have one, you want a sip and sometimes you like to dribble it down your front. You're pretty content with a sippy cup, though. Cheerios are your absolute favorite.

Thursday, June 9, 2005

The Best Night Ever

(From my journal to Jacob)

You slept from 8:45 to 5:45 last night! That's a record! I couldn't believe it. You love Cheerios and fruit puffs more than anything else. You love pushing a toy car around and love rolling a ball around in the kitchen.

Sunday, June 5, 2005

Tickling the Old Ivories

(From my journal to Jacob)

You are into chewing on belts and chasing the cats. You tackled Pumpkin today. You can basically stand on your own, but you're afraid. You keep going up to the piano and playing keys. You love it when we help you sit on the bench so you can pound away. You are non-stop whenever you're awake.

Sleep Improvement!

(From my journal to Jacob)

You are so busy! You pull yourself up so well and you crawl so fast. It's hard to keep up with you. You want to climb everything. Today you took your first shower. :) It was fun and you liked it. I think you thought it was relaxing, and it sure beat playing outside of the shower while I'm in there!

You love paper -- you want to crinkle and eat any paper product. You love your veggies way more than fruit. You love cereal puffs best of all. We tried plain yogurt 2 days ago, and it's okay. You are napping a lot because you're so busy. You slept until 9 this morning! That's crazy. You slept from 8:15 to 12:45 a.m. last night, then I fed you. Then until probably 3. I think that's all until 9! That's a first!

You're still gorgeous. Everyone always comments on your eyes. 12-month outfits are sometimes too short! You've been laying your head down on things when you're tired lately. It's so sweet. You'll do it on the floor, but also on people's legs, Brianna's head, etc. It's so cute! You babble like crazy. You might have said "kee kee" a couple of weeks ago to Pumpkin, but maybe not. Occasionally I think you know that "momma" is me, but I'm not positive. You know when we say your name in a low voice that you should stop. When you play, you growl. Or when you eat. It's hilarious. We call it your monster voice. You still love to jump. You still love to be held. You're so sweet when we nap together. You just keep patting me to make sure I'm there. I love you!

Crawling is Cool

(From my journal to Jacob)

You are crawling so well! Yesterday you were crawling onto your dad's lap and sitting down. :) How cute. You love to stand. You're sleeping pretty well. You saw "mamama" a lot. :)

A Topple Off the Bed

(From my journal to Jacob)

You fell off of the bed this morning. I thought I was awake, but must have dozed off. I'm so, so sorry! I felt/feel awful. I don't think you actually got hurt because I think you were going for the alarm clock and kind of flipped over. I couldn't find a red spot and I keep feeling your head and nothing seems to be tender. We'll have to be so much more careful since you're crawling now! You love to crumple up magazine and book covers right now. You love to pull yourself to standing.

Thursday, April 28, 2005

Ma Ma Ma and Ba Ba Ba

(From my journal to Jacob)

You started actually crawling forward on Monday. You won't crawl to us, just objects that you want. Your two bottom teeth have surfaced, but are not all the way up yet. You're babbling "ma ma ma" and "ba ba ba" and "mo mo mo." It's so cute! Last night you just said "ma ma" while you were playing.

We have days where you just go down for naps so easily. We set you in your crib and you just go to sleep! You're staying in your crib longer and longer. You're eating a lot more (for you, not for other babies). You're eating baby crackers. Mom and Dad both think the banana ones are delicious. We sent in a video of you to audition to be a Quiznos Subs spokesbaby. :) That would be awesome if you won!

Friday, April 8, 2005

The First Tooth

(From my journal to Jacob)

You are fussy! I can see a tiny spot where your tooth has either surfaced or is just about ti. :)

You pulled yourself to standing just now! You did it on your play table (and then fell over). You are getting so strong!

You're getting cranky and I'm not sure why. I gave you some Tylenol for your tooth. You're not hungry and we just got up from a nap a little bit ago. Maybe you are tired again.

Wednesday, April 6, 2005

Tooth Buds!

(From my journal to Jacob)

Angela said you have 2 little tooth buds visible under your gums. Not too long until you have teeth! You went to Angela for your first time on Monday.

Meeting the Greats

(From my journal to Jacob)

Last week you started scooting forward a tiny bit. I think it was Thursday. Today we've been playing with blocks and you like to knock them over and laugh. :)

You met your Great Aunt Karen and your Great Uncle John on Saturday. They were driving through from Florida to Wisconsin (maybe Michigan -- I don't remember).

Your sleep habits are definitely improving. We can actually put you in the crib and you sleep for 2-3 hours! Usually only 2 when I'm home, but still a great improvement to be able to put you down.

Dangling a cloth in front of you makes you laugh. Two days ago, you laughed whenever your dad bowed his head. We couldn't figure out what was so funny.

Wednesday, March 30, 2005

Tears at Bedtime

(From my journal to Jacob)

You have been fussy today. That usually happens after you get your shots. Last night, I had to get some stuff done and your dad was exhausted. I let you cry for 15 minutes (I'm sorry!). You fell asleep, and actually, you were calm and talking before you fell asleep. You slept for 2 hours and then woke up to eat. I fed you, and then put you down. You only cried for 3 minutes. Today for your second nap, you only cried for 1 minute! It didn't work tonight. I finally got you to sleep around 8:15, and you were out cold with your mouth wide open. :) So cute. I can't wait until I'm done with training so I can spend more time with you. I had a dream a few nights ago that you could repeat "I love you." It was so sweet!

Saturday, March 26, 2005

Flirting at IHOP

(From my journal to Jacob)

Yesterday we went to IHOP. While we were waiting for a table, you were busy trying to charm everyone who came in. I think you were pretty successful. It's funny when people don't pay attention to you because you just look at them like you can't believe they wouldn't want to smile at you. You like to be busy.

Sunday, March 20, 2005

Scooter Jake

(From my journal to Jacob)

You are 6 months old! That's so strange! You've been scooting backwards. It's so funny! You wiggle on your tummy and then scoot. Wiggle, scoot. You started green beans this weekend. They look disgusting, but actually taste okay! You're babbling a lot. This morning it was "mmmm-ba." Yesterday you laughed whenever your dad shook a jacket in front of you.

Tuesday, March 15, 2005

It's Okay to Eat

(From my journal to Jacob)

The night before last, you started laughing while your dad was playing with Pumpkin and a shoelace. It was so cute! You also did a big boy laugh one time over the weekend when the cats did something.

Last night you slept 3 hours straight in your crib! That was fantastic! On Saturday, we had you watch Brianna eat and then you shared a jar of bananas. Sunday night and Monday night, you ate! So I'm very happy. Toward the end of last week, I was wondering if you would ever eat -- you were crying if I even tried to put a bite in your mouth.

We keep losing your pacifiers. I think like 4 in the past week. I have no idea where they go!

Thursday, March 10, 2005

The Cats Are Curious

(From my journal to Jacob)

Nana says you were good today! You napped for an hour and then you didn't cry the whole time! Hooray! I'm so happy. I showed off pictures of you at work today and they're hanging on the wall near my machine. You're so cute!

Today you wanted to get up at 5:30 a.m., but I was mean and made you go back to sleep.

You wore your "monkey" outfit from Aunt Jemima today, and it was so cute on you! You'll probably be too big for it soon.

You got to pet Pumpkin a little today. You smile so big! You get upset when the cats ignore you. You try to be friendly by giving them smiles. It's so cute. Pumpkin is a little curious about you, but Boehmke stays away unless you're crying. I'm not sure if she wants to help or hurt you, so I'm not taking any chances!

Wednesday, March 9, 2005

Babysitters

(From my journal to Jacob)

You push up on hands and knees sometimes. You sit up pretty well, but still topple over. You love to play. You're so big! I started work at National City on Monday. You (for now) are with Aunt Jeanne Mondays and Tuesdays (2:15-4:30), your Nana Wednesdays and Thursdays, and your Uncle Theo on Fridays. This is just while I'm in training. So far, you have cried most of the time with Jeanne and Nana. You're wonderful for your dad! We still can't get you to eat cereal. You make a funny face when we give it to you. :) Because I'm working, I have to get a lot done before I drop you off, so I barely have any time to just hang out with you, and I hate that. You seem fairly content, but I still wish we could play more. You love to hold your bottle by yourself, so we got you some small 4-oz bottles. You sometimes hold your hand in thumb-sucking position even when you have a pacifier in (or are drinking a bottle). It's so funny!

Monday, February 28, 2005

Time to Work

(From my journal to Jacob)

You drank out of a sippy cup today (a tiny bit of water). You are so much fun! You reach for me when you want me and hold your arms out.

We visited Grandma and Grandpa this weekend. Aunt Anne was there, too. We saw Aunt Jemima (Sarah) and also Gina, Hans, and Grace. We had a good time.

Dad and I are working on a sleep plan for you. I start work a week from today. I really don't want to. Your dad is looking into going back to school.

I napped with you today. So much fun to do!

A General Type of Update

(From my journal to Jacob)

Your dad and I are now reading the No Cry Sleep Solution. We need to get you sleeping better! I'm holding you as you (fitfully) sleep right now. You wake up every time I put you down. You make some "ma" sounds now. You are still so beautiful. You don't like strangers as much right now, so less of your "flirting." You'll smile, but they have to work for it. You LOVE your daddy and smile and move around when you see him. The two of you play and play. You love watching Boehmke and Pumpkin and don't understand why they always run away from you. You're doing better at eating your cereal. You can launch yourself in the direction you want to go -- sitting to on your tummy. You love stacking cups and rattles. There's a toy bunny that makes you laugh now. :) You're so fun! We love you!

Jacob Still Doesn't See the Need to Use His Crib

(From my journal to Jacob)

You can sit up most of the time, but when you want to be doing something else, you topple over pretty fast, so I can't leave you for a second when you're sitting. We are working on getting a routine. So far, you go to sleep around 9:30 or 10 and get up at 7:45. (You wake up every couple of hours to eat.) You nap around 9:30 or 10 a.m., and the rest of the naps have no pattern with duration or frequency. :) We want you to sleep through the night, and in your crib! Still sleeping with me. You are sweeter every day, though.

Saturday, February 5, 2005

Time to Move!

(From my journal to Jacob)

Today, you scooted backwards a little! You also crawled a little with my help -- I lifted your chest, and you did the rest! :)

Chatty Jacob

(From my journal to Jacob)

Your dad and I love making you laugh. You are so fun! Yesterday you said "mama" but I know it doesn't count since you don't know what it means.

Today you've been napping a lot! We went to a mommies group today at Beth and Leah's house. You smiled at a lot of people. Strangers always comment on how cute you are, how big your eyes are, and how much you smile. You are quite a little ham. It's so fun.

Your cousin Keaton will probably be born tonight or tomorrow. Heidi is being induced tonight. Her amniotic fluid is running low. No surprise -- she was due January 16th! Hospitals aren't very welcoming to older babies, so it will be a few days before you get to meet your new cousin. You are going to look so huge in comparison!

You have been very talkative around 10:30 at night lately. You don't usually want to go to sleep for the night until 11 or so, and you still get up every 2 hours. You are finally becoming a better napper, though.

I cut my hair to shoulder length on the 22nd, and I was worried that you would miss my hair, but you still smile when I brush it. Maybe not as much.

You are so, so beautiful. I took naked pictures of you this week. I think it was on Wednesday.

Your dad has been working 12 hours a day and 6 days a week, so he treasures his time with you when he gets home. You just talk and talk to him. :) We love you!

Oh, I've never noted that for a few weeks, you would say, "Ning nang" when you were mad. It was so hilarious!

Your Aunt Jemima (Sarah) visited last weekend. She bought you a trucker hat and matching brown shirt from Old Navy, and a gray IU soccer shirt. You showed her your true feelings about the car by screaming your head off wherever we went.

Your Grandma and Grandma B. are coming tomorrow, and your Uncle Ben and my cousin Peter and his wife Torie, and their baby Emerson are coming on Sunday. I'm not sure what the name for what Emerson is to you is (weird sentence -- sorry!), but she's about a month younger than you. They visited while you were both still in our tummies. It'll be fun to watch the two of you meet.

Rice Cereal is for Dorks

(From my journal to Jacob)

You're 4 months old! Today we went to Dr. Kosten. You are 15 lb, 14 oz, which is in the 50-75th percentile. You are 26.25" and that is in the 75th-90th percentile. The doctor said you were very athletic looking.

I gave you your first rice cereal tonight. You weren't sure what you thought of it. You then became more interested in the spoon than the food. We'll try again tomorrow night!

You rolled from back to front for the first time on Sunday. Your dad saw it first! You love to watch him.

Your dad is working a lot this week, so he only gets to see you for a little at night now. You can scream and scream and scream. You're still not sleeping in your crib -- you prefer dear old mom's arms -- and you wake up every 2 hours! You need to give me a break!

Wednesday, January 5, 2005

Please Sleep Through the Night!

(From my journal to Jacob)

You are much more interested in making eye contact than eating. You stare until someone looks back, and then you smile. :) I have renewed the effort to get you to sleep in your crib. Your dad and I decided really only the night before last was the real start. Things got kind of messed up with the holidays. Monday night didn't go well at all. Last night you slept from 12:30 a.m. - 2:45 a.m. in your crib, and from 3:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. So, that's good!

I'm doing massage before I put you down. You seem to like it. You still love your Jumperoo. You smile and coo like crazy in it.

Happy New Year, Baby!

(From my journal to Jacob)

Happy New Year! You are talking loudly in your play yard. We visited your Grandma and Grandpa S. yesterday. They gave you your Christmas presents -- a retro rocket rider and a Colts outfit.
