On Thursday night, we went to Jacob's karate studio. They were having a haunted house to raise money for a 15-year-old student with cancer. You could stand in line for a scary version or a not-so-scary version. Jacob insisted on the scary version. Greg told him what it would be like. He then asked if he wanted me to go through with him instead (one of us had to stay outside with Benjamin). Greg said, "Mommy will be a lot more fun in there. She'll jump and squeak!" Jacob laughed and chose me.
While waiting in line, I kept asking if he'd be scared and suggested going through the not-so-scary line. I told him people would jump out and it would be dark and they'd be scary. He kept laughing at me and saying, "I know, Mom...." And I thought about how my little boy was getting to be so big.
We went through with a slightly older little girl and her mother. There was a sort of "holding area" inside the haunted house. It was decorated and there was music playing, but nothing moved inside it. The little girl started saying she was scared and didn't want to do it. Her mom kept telling her she'd be fine. Jacob was okay until a guy in a Jason costume came out (he didn't do anything scary). Jacob decided he wanted the not-so-scary version. Because the other girl was scared, too, I asked if we could switch. They said that was fine.
In the very first room, there were people in costume walking around. It was dark, but they were friendly characters handing out candy. Jacob decided he didn't want to be there. I kept telling him it would be fast just to go through. He refused to budge. We finally had to go out through the entrance.
I think he was a little embarrassed afterwards, but we kept telling him it was okay to be scared. He asked if the other kids went all the way through. They did, but most of them were a little bit older.

Friday night Jacob started saying he didn't feel good. He said his head and tummy hurt. He was warm, so we gave him some children's motrin. Saturday morning, he threw up all over the floor. He took a 4-hour nap and then seemed to feel better, except for a decreased appetite. He originally didn't want to go trick-or-treating, but once kids started coming to the door, he changed his mind. We let him go, only because he washed his hands first and wore a mask the whole time. (He's not running a fever anymore, and seems fine to go back to school tomorrow.)
Jacob went as the Black Power Ranger. Benjamin dressed up as a Little Ninja. As we walked away from any house with trim along the sidewalk, Benjamin would kick at the trim and say, "Yah!"
